Summer holiday nails: ideas and packing tips

Published

Summer holiday nails work best short to medium: easy to live with around suitcases, sun cream and swims, and bright enough to show up in every photo. Pick one idea below, put the set on with glue the evening before you travel, and pack a small kit so one lifted nail does not spoil the week.

These are style ideas to help you choose, not a list of what is in stock.

Summer holiday nail ideas

Brights, one colour per nail. Coral, lemon, turquoise, hot pink and cobalt, each on a different nail. Keep every shade at the same brightness and the mix looks planned, and it sits easily beside a patterned swimsuit or a printed dress.

One bright, glossy. A single shade on all ten nails: orange, poppy red or a hot pink. Glossy catches the sun in photos. On short square or squoval nails it looks clean and stays out of the way of bags and sun loungers.

Colour French tip. A nude base with a bright tip, or a different tip colour on each nail. A white French tip also reads crisply against summer clothes.

Pearl and glazed. A milky base with a sheer pearl shimmer on top. It is quieter than a bright, so it suits a city break, a wedding abroad or anyone who wants one set for the whole trip.

Small summer details. A plain base with one accent nail per hand: a tiny lemon, a cherry, a daisy or a fine wavy line. Keep the detail small so it reads well on a short nail.

Sunset ombré. Pink fading to orange or yellow from base to tip. It suits medium almond nails and an evening out on the last night.

Short summer nails

Short summer nails suit one clear idea rather than lots of detail, and they are the easiest press-on nails for a holiday spent in and out of the water. Ideas that work at a short length:

If your own nails are short or wide, press-on nails for short or wide nail beds shows which shapes suit them.

Shape and length for a holiday

A holiday means suitcases, sun cream bottles, swimwear ties and a lot of time in water. Short and medium sets are easiest to live with.

Holiday Shape Length
Beach or pool Squoval, oval or short square Short
City break Almond or oval Short or medium
Wedding or event abroad Almond Medium
Camping or an active trip Oval or squoval Short

Squoval is a square with soft corners. Long coffin or stiletto shapes look striking but catch on bag zips and towel fabric. Nail shapes explained shows each shape side by side.

Before you go

  1. Check the fit a few days ahead. We make three ready-made sizes, so choose the closest of our three sizes using the sizing guide. Hold each press-on against your nail with no adhesive and file the sides of any that touch the skin.
  2. Choose glue for anything longer than a weekend. Glue usually holds one to two weeks. Adhesive tabs usually hold two to five days, so they suit a short break. Nail glue vs adhesive tabs compares the two.
  3. Apply the evening before you travel. The adhesive needs at least an hour before water, and overnight is better. The application guide has the full routine.

What to pack

Rules on carrying glue and other liquids depend on your airline and airport, so check with your airline before you pack. Keep glue capped and out of reach of children.

What shortens wear on holiday

Water, warmth and cream are what a holiday brings, and all three work against adhesive.

So a set may not reach the top of its usual range on a pool holiday. If an edge lifts on a glue set, dry it, add a tiny dot of glue under the edge and press for 20 to 30 seconds. Why press-on nails lift shows how to read where a nail lifts and fix it.

Coming home

Soak the set off rather than pulling it. Pulling press-ons off dry is what damages nails. How to remove press-on nails walks through the soak, and a set taken off this way can be worn again on the next trip.

Keep nail glue away from your eyes and away from children, and stop wearing a set if your skin gets sore or irritated.

Questions we get asked

Should I use glue or adhesive tabs on holiday?
Glue, for most holidays. It usually holds one to two weeks, which covers a week or a fortnight away. Adhesive tabs usually hold two to five days, so they suit a weekend or a short city break.
Can I swim with press-on nails?
Yes, once the adhesive has had at least an hour to set, and overnight is better. Long spells in water soften adhesive, so dry your hands after a swim and check the edges. A set may not reach the top of its usual range on a holiday spent in the pool or the sea.
Can I take nail glue in my hand luggage?
We cannot answer that for every trip, because rules on liquids and adhesives depend on the airline and the airport. Check with your airline before you pack glue.
What size should I order for a holiday set?
We make three ready-made sizes, S, M and L. Choose the closest of the three using the sizing guide, then file the sides of any press-on that sits over the skin. Check the fit a few days before you travel.
