Short Halloween nails: simple press-on ideas

Published

Short Halloween nails look best with one simple idea: a black French tip, a glossy blood red, or a plain base with one small ghost, bat or web. Pick a short shape you can live with (almond for a witchy point, squoval or oval for everyday), then choose the colour that matches your costume.

These Halloween press-on nail ideas are styles to help you choose, not a list of what is in stock.

Why short works for Halloween

Halloween is one night, but there is a costume to get into, face paint to put on and maybe a bag of sweets to open. A short set lets you do all of that without catching a nail on a zip or a wig. It also suits the days around the party, when you are back at a keyboard.

Short nails make a small detail stand out, too. One ghost or a fine web line is easy to see when the nails around it are plain, and a simple design still shows in low party light.

Short shapes to choose from

Simple Halloween nail ideas

Glossy black. About as simple as Halloween nails get. On a short squoval it looks sharp, and it goes with most costumes.

Black French tip. A thin black tip on a sheer nude or milky base. Quiet enough for the office the day after.

Blood red. A deep, glossy red reads as vampire at a glance. For a darker look, go burgundy or wine.

Deep purple and witchy green. Less expected than black. A dark plum or bottle green looks good matte or with a soft shimmer.

Pumpkin orange. Bright and fun. Pair it with one black accent nail per hand so it reads as Halloween, not summer.

Matte black with one gloss nail. Matte looks modern on a short nail, and a single glossy accent nail stops it looking flat.

Small details for one accent nail

On a short nail, one small design is usually enough. Put it on the ring finger and keep the other nails plain.

Match the set to your costume

Costume Shape Finish
Witch Short almond Matte black, witchy green or a gold moon accent
Vampire Short almond or oval Blood red, burgundy or red drip tips
Ghost or skeleton Short oval Milky white with one ghost, or black with white details
Pumpkin or black cat Short squoval Orange with one black accent nail, or glossy black
Last-minute costume Any short shape Black French tip: it goes with most outfits

If one set has to cover the party and work the next morning, a black French tip on a short squoval or oval is the easy middle ground.

Getting the set ready around your costume

Costume nights add two things a normal night out does not: face paint and a lot of make-up to take off afterwards. Both involve oil and cream near your fingertips, so plan the order.

  1. A few days before: check the fit. We make three ready-made sizes, so choose the closest of our three sizes (the sizing guide shows how to check). Hold each nail against your own, with no adhesive, and file the sides of any nail that touches the skin.
  2. Choose tabs or glue. For one party, adhesive tabs: they usually hold two to five days. For a set you want on all week, glue, which usually holds one to two weeks.
  3. The evening before: apply. Put the set on before any face paint, body paint or hand cream. Oil on the nail is a common reason a set lifts, and the adhesive needs about an hour before water, overnight if you can. The application guide has the full routine.
  4. On the night: do make-up with your nails on. Use a brush or sponge for face paint rather than your fingertips, and rub any cream into your hands, not over the nail edges.
  5. After the party: take make-up off with care. Keep oily make-up remover and cleansing balm away from the nail edges, because oil worked under an edge is how a set is loosened at removal. Wash in warm, not hot, water. How to make press-on nails last longer has more daily habits that help.
  6. When you’re done with the set: soak it off. Pulling press-ons off dry is what damages nails, so soak instead. See how to remove press-on nails. Taken off this way, the set can be worn again.

Keep nail glue away from your eyes and away from children, and stop wearing a set if your skin gets sore or irritated.

Questions we get asked

Do Halloween designs work on short nails?
Yes. Short nails suit one clear idea, like a black French tip, a glossy blood red or a single ghost on the ring finger. Busy scenes with lots of detail read better on medium nails.
What is a simple Halloween nail idea for a last-minute costume?
A solid colour in black, deep red, purple or orange, with one accent nail per hand. It reads as Halloween at a glance and still looks neat at work the next morning.
Should I put my nails on before or after costume make-up?
Before. Press-ons need a clean, dry nail with no oil or cream on it, so apply the set the evening before, then do face paint and hand cream on the night without touching the nail surface.
Glue or adhesive tabs for a Halloween party?
Tabs if the set is for one party, because they usually hold two to five days and come off more easily the next day. Glue if you want to keep the set on through the week, since it usually holds one to two weeks.
