Debs nails ideas: match your nails to your dress
The best debs nails ideas start with the dress: pick one shade from it, or choose a nail that sits quietly beside it. Then add a French tip or a classic finish, and wear the set for a day or two before the night so nothing surprises you.
The debs is the Irish end-of-school formal, and it usually falls in late summer into autumn, depending on the school. Every set we make is designed and made by hand in our Dublin studio. These are style ideas to help you choose, not a list of what is in stock.
Debs nails by dress colour
You do not need an exact match. Pick one shade from the dress, the shoes or the bag, or choose a neutral that lets the dress lead.
| Dress colour | Debs nails that work |
|---|---|
| Navy | Milky nude, silver shimmer, a thin silver French tip, or glossy navy with one silver accent |
| Royal or cobalt blue | A clean nude or milky pink, so the nails do not compete with the dress |
| Baby blue | Matching baby blue, a milky nude, or a white French tip on a sheer pink base |
| Emerald or sage green | Soft nude, gold accents, or a matching green on short square nails |
| Red or burgundy | Matching red, wine red, or a nude base with a thin red French tip |
| Black | Deep red, a black French tip on nude, or gold chrome |
| Pastels (lilac, blush, peach) | The same pastel, a milky white base, or a pearl finish |
| Silver, gold or sequins | A soft nude with one chrome accent in the same metal |
If you are torn, every row above has a nude or milky option, so a milky nude is the easy fallback.
Blue debs nails
With blue, the shade decides the nails. Navy is dark and formal, so silver suits it: a silver shimmer on every nail, a thin silver French tip, or glossy navy with one silver accent on each ring finger. A bright royal or cobalt blue already does a lot of work, so a clean nude or milky pink keeps the look balanced. Baby blue is soft and pretty with a matching pastel, a white French tip or a pearl finish.
French tip press-on nails and other classics
French tip press-on nails are an easy debs choice, because a French tip sits well with any dress colour. Ways to make it your own:
- Classic French: a white tip on a sheer pink or nude base. Clean and timeless in photos.
- Micro French: a hairline tip, good for short nails.
- Colour French: a tip in one shade from your dress, such as navy, emerald or wine.
- Deep V French: the tip comes to a point, a small change that looks a little dressier.
- Shimmer or chrome French: a silver or gold tip for a dress with sparkle.
Other classics that suit a formal night:
- Milky nude or milky pink: a sheer, soft base that looks like your own nails, only tidier.
- Glossy solid colour: one shade from the dress, on short square or squoval nails (a square with soft corners).
- Nude with one accent: plain nails with a single shimmer or chrome nail on each hand.
Shape and length for a long night
The debs is a long night of photos, food and dancing, so short to medium is easiest to live with. Almond and oval look soft and elegant with most dresses. Square and squoval give a crisp line and show off a solid colour. Long coffin or stiletto sets look striking in photos but are harder to manage with a clutch bag, a phone and a meal. Our guide to nail shapes compares them.
Your debs nails plan
- A few weeks before: choose your size. We make three ready-made sizes, so choose the closest of our three sizes using the sizing guide.
- Check the fit. Hold each nail against your own with no adhesive, and file the sides of any that touch the skin. A press-on that sits edge to edge is less likely to lift.
- Do a trial wear. Wear the set for a day or two with adhesive tabs, so you know how the length feels before the night.
- Soak the trial set off. Pulling press-ons off dry is what damages nails, so soak instead. See how to remove press-on nails.
- Clean the backs and store the set. Peel or buff the old tab off the back of each nail, wash and dry them, and store them flat in order. A set taken off by soaking can be worn again, so the trial set can be your debs set. Can you reuse press-on nails? covers the cleaning.
- Pick your adhesive for the night. Glue usually holds one to two weeks, so it suits keeping the set on for the week after. Adhesive tabs usually hold two to five days and come off more easily. Nail glue vs adhesive tabs compares the two.
- The evening before: apply. The adhesive needs about an hour before water, and overnight is better. The application guide has the full routine.
- On the night: pack a fine nail file. It smooths a snagged edge before it catches on your dress.
Keep nail glue away from your eyes and away from children, and stop wearing a set if your skin gets sore or irritated.

Questions we get asked
- What nails go with a blue debs dress?
- For navy, try a milky nude, a silver shimmer or a thin silver French tip. For royal or cobalt blue, a clean nude lets the dress lead. For baby blue, match the shade or wear a white French tip on a sheer pink base.
- Are French tip press-on nails good for the debs?
- Yes. A French tip sits well with any dress colour, and you can swap the white tip for a colour from your dress, a shimmer or a thin gold line.
- When should I put my debs nails on?
- The evening before. The adhesive needs about an hour before water, and overnight is better, so the set has settled by the time you get ready.
- Should I use glue or adhesive tabs for the debs?
- Glue if you want the set on for the week after, because it usually holds one to two weeks. Adhesive tabs if it is just the one night, because they usually hold two to five days and come off more easily.
