Nail glue vs adhesive tabs: which to use

Published

Nail glue vs adhesive tabs comes down to how long you want the set on. Glue usually holds press-on nails for one to two weeks; adhesive tabs usually hold for two to five days and come off faster.

If you have been weighing up nail glue or tabs, the rest of this guide covers how each goes on, how each comes off, and which suits which plans. Adhesive tabs (often sold as sticky tabs) are double-sided stickers shaped like a nail. Nail glue is a liquid you brush or dot onto the natural nail. Neither one fixes a poor fit, so whichever you pick, start with the size: choose the closest of our three sizes using the sizing guide, and file the sides of a press-on lightly if it is a touch wide.

Nail glue vs sticky tabs side by side

Nail glue Adhesive tabs
Typical hold Usually one to two weeks Usually two to five days
Putting it on Thin layer on the natural nail, press for 20 to 30 seconds Stick the tab on the natural nail, peel, press
Mess Can seep out if you use too much Nothing to seep out
Coming off Longer soak in warm water with a little oil Usually a short soak in warm soapy water
Clean-up Buff old glue off the nail and the back of the press-on Peel or buff the tab off
Reusing the set Yes, after a soak Yes, with a fresh tab
Best for Holidays, busy weeks, hands often in water One evening, a weekend, trying a new shape or length

When nail glue is the better choice

Pick glue when you want a set to stay put through a normal week: work, washing up, the gym, a few showers. It holds longer than tabs, so it suits anyone who would rather apply once and forget about it for a while.

Glue asks a bit more of you. You need a steady hand, a thin layer, and patience at removal time, because glue takes longer to soften. If you plan to wear the set again, that slower soak is worth it: forcing a glued nail off is what damages the natural nail underneath.

When adhesive tabs are the better choice

Pick tabs when you want press-on nails without glue. They suit a wedding, a night out, a few days off before you need bare nails again, or simply testing whether a shape or length works for you before you commit to two weeks.

Tabs are also the easier start if you have never worn press-ons. There is nothing to spill or seep, and a tab that goes on crooked can be peeled off and replaced before you press the nail down. The trade is time: tabs give you days rather than weeks, and fewer of them if your hands are in hot water a lot.

How to apply press-ons with glue

  1. Prep the natural nail. Push back the cuticle, buff off the shine and wipe each nail with remover or rubbing alcohol. Do not touch the nails after this.
  2. Use a thin layer. Put a thin layer of glue on your natural nail, not on the press-on. Too much seeps out and weakens the hold.
  3. Angle, then press. Set the press-on at the cuticle line at a slight angle, lower it, and press firmly for 20 to 30 seconds, squeezing the sides too.
  4. Wait before water. Give it an hour before you shower or wash dishes.

How to apply press-ons with adhesive tabs

  1. Prep the same way. A clean, dry, buffed nail matters just as much for tabs. Any oil or hand cream left on the nail stops the tab from gripping.
  2. Pick a tab a little smaller than your nail. No edge of the tab should show past the press-on or touch the skin.
  3. Stick, then peel. Press the tab onto your natural nail first, smooth out any air, then peel off the backing.
  4. Press and hold. Place the press-on from the cuticle down and press firmly for 20 to 30 seconds.

How each one comes off

Both come off the same way: soak, never pull. Warm soapy water for about ten minutes is usually enough for tabs. Glue takes longer to soften, so add a tablespoon of oil to the water and give it about twenty minutes. Then work oil under the edges and lift gently with a wooden stick. If a nail resists, soak it again.

Afterwards, buff any leftover adhesive off your natural nail and off the back of each press-on, wash the set, and let it dry before you store it. The full method is in how to remove press-on nails.

If one nail lifts

One loose nail does not mean the whole set has to come off. Do not pull at it, and do not press it back down over water or oil.

If the same nail lifts again and again, look at the fit before the adhesive. A press-on that is too wide rests on the skin at the sides, and that edge lifts first. File its sides lightly so it sits edge to edge on your natural nail.

Using nail glue safely

The same goes for tabs: if the skin around a nail gets sore or irritated, take the set off.

So which is better: nail glue or sticky tabs?

Neither is better in general. Each is better for a plan.

You can also mix them on one set: glue on the nails that take the most knocks, tabs on the rest. Whatever you choose, fit decides more than the adhesive does. Our sets come in three ready-made sizes, so check the sizing guide and choose the closest one.

Questions we get asked

How long do press-on nails last with sticky tabs?
Usually two to five days. Tabs hold best on a clean, dry, buffed nail that stays out of water for the first hour. Hot water, hand cream and long nails can all shorten that.
Can I wear press-on nails without glue?
Yes. Adhesive tabs are the way to wear press-ons without glue. They hold for a shorter time, usually two to five days, and come off after a soak in warm soapy water.
Can I reuse a tab?
Use a fresh tab each time. Peel or buff the old one off the back of the press-on, and the press-on itself can be worn again.
Can I switch from tabs to glue on the same set?
Yes. Take the set off by soaking, clean every bit of tab off the back of each nail, let it dry, then apply with glue as usual.
What should I watch out for with nail glue?
Keep glue away from your eyes and out of reach of children, and follow the label on the glue you use. Stop wearing the set if your skin gets sore or irritated.
