How to remove press-on nails without damage

Updated

Most damage from press-ons comes from pulling them off dry. Given a soak and a little patience, a set slides off in about fifteen minutes and the nail underneath is left alone. The same method also keeps the press-ons themselves in good shape, so you can wear them again.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Soak. Put your fingertips in the warm soapy water for ten minutes. Warmth softens the adhesive. If you used adhesive tabs, this is usually enough on its own.
  2. Oil the edges. Take your hands out, dry them, and work oil under the edge of each press-on near the cuticle and along the sides. Wait a minute.
  3. Lift, do not pry. Slide the wooden stick under one edge and rock it gently. If it resists, stop, soak for another five minutes, and try again. The press-on should come away with almost no force.
  4. Buff off the leftover adhesive. Any glue still on your natural nail comes off with a buffer in a few passes. Do not pick at it.
  5. Feed the nail. Rub oil into the nail and cuticle. Your natural nail has been sealed for a week or two and will feel dry for a day.

For sets worn with glue

Nail glue is designed to be waterproof, so soaking alone can take longer. Two things help: add a tablespoon of oil to the water, and give it twenty minutes rather than ten. Acetone also dissolves nail glue, but it will strip the top coat and the design off the press-ons, so only use it if you do not plan to wear the set again.

Keeping the set for next time

A handmade set can go through three or four wears this way. The tips may need a light file between wears.

Questions we get asked

One nail is really stuck. Soak that hand again, longer. A nail that will not lift after twenty minutes in warm oily water is rare, and the answer is still more soaking, never force.

My natural nail looks white or feels dry afterwards. Buff off any leftover adhesive, use oil, and give it a day. If it does not clear in a day or two, or a nail is sore, leave it bare for a while before the next set.

Can I take them off in the shower? The steam helps, but do not pull them off wet. Finish with the oil and the stick at the sink.
