How to apply press-on nails so they last
A press-on set stays on as long as the surface under it is clean and dry and the nail was pressed with real pressure. Most sets that lift early skipped one of those three things. Here is the routine we use in the studio, and it takes about ten minutes.
What you need
- Your set, with the size card and the adhesive that came in the box
- A cuticle pusher (wooden or metal)
- A fine nail file and a buffer
- Nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol on a pad
- A small bowl of warm water if your cuticles are dry
Step by step
- Pick your sizes first. Lay the nails out against each finger before you open the glue. A press-on should sit edge to edge on your nail without hanging over the skin. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller one. Our sizing guide shows how to measure.
- Push back the cuticle. Soften it in warm water for a minute, then push it back gently. Skin that overlaps the nail will lift the press-on within a day.
- Shape and buff. File your natural nail short with a rounded edge. Buff the shine off the surface so it looks matte. This gives the adhesive something to grip.
- Clean and dry. Wipe every nail with remover or alcohol. Do not touch the nails or apply hand cream after this point. Oil is the number one reason a set lifts.
- Apply adhesive. For glue: a thin layer on your natural nail, not on the press-on. Too much glue seeps out and weakens the bond. For tabs: press the tab onto your natural nail first, peel the backing, then apply the press-on.
- Angle, then press. Place the press-on at the cuticle line at a slight angle, lower it down, and press firmly for 20 to 30 seconds. Squeeze the sides too, so no air is trapped.
- Wait before water. Give the set one hour before showering or washing dishes. Overnight is better if you can.
Making it last longer
- Do one hand at a time and let it set.
- Wear gloves for cleaning. Hot water and detergent are hard on any adhesive.
- Keep the nails at a length you can live with. Long sets lever off more easily.
- If an edge lifts, dry it, add a tiny dot of glue, and press again. Do not pull it off.
Questions we get asked
Glue or tabs? Glue lasts one to two weeks and gives the strongest hold. Tabs last two to five days, come off in minutes, and are the better choice if you change sets often.
Can I use the set again? Yes. Handmade sets are thicker than the ones from a pharmacy and are made to be reused. Remove them properly, buff the old adhesive off the back, and store them in the box.
My nails are very short or bitten. Press-ons still work. Choose a shorter set for the first week so the natural nail underneath can grow a little.
